Evergreen's Lariat Loop Day Trip
August 26, 2011 by Margaret Stapleton
Decades ago, when I first relocated to Evergreen Colorado, and bought a home, we took lots of day trips. That's the thing about Evergreen. You are in a Denver suburb with all the conveniences of a big city but really it's more like living in the mountains. Adventures are everywhere. So, we loved exploring and really loved eventually finding The Lariat Loop. The Lariat Loop is comfortable 40-mile drive tracing the early adventures of mountain motoring of the 1920s. You never have to leave your car, but you'll want to. From Golden to Morrison, this National Scenic Byway, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, hosts more than 20 museums and countless historic sites.
From dinosaur tracks on a petrified rippling beach at Dinosaur Ridge and the natural amphitheater at Red Rocks outside Morrison, meander up old Highway 40 (the slower, original connection to Evergreen), then, check out Buffalo Bill's Grave and Museum and the Boettcher Summer House. Then marvel at the Continental Divide and buffalo at the "Buffalo Overlook." You'll have to enter I70 briefly, but get off immediately at Evergreen, maybe stop at The El Rancho for great buffalo burgers, continue on Highway 74 (Bear Creek Canyon Scenic drive). Stop at Evergreen Lake and rent a paddle boat or canoe before heading back down through Kittredge to Morrison. There are so many stops along the way, be sure you download the Tour Map.
The Humphrey Memorial Park & Museum hosts local events from Baroque Concerts to cooking classes and quilting bees. The Hiwan Homestead Museum offers tours and maintains active crafts illustrating the lifestyle of early, albeit wealthy, mountain homeowners.
You see, buying a home in Evergreen isn't only about the real estate. It buying a lifestyle and piece of history. When I am working with Evergreen relocation buyers, I don't just show homes. I love to introduce my clients to a fine old lady with a lot of personality, nooks and crannies. Evergreen is just waiting for you to discover her. Let me introduce you.
